Sotheby’s ‘The Goose’ NFT by Dmitri Cherniak Nets $6.2M

Sotheby's 'The Goose' NFT by Dmitri Cherniak Nets $6.2M

Dmitri Cherniak’s Ringers #879, best known as ‘The Goose’ NFT, has surprised the art world, shattering records at a Sotheby’s auction by changing hands for an eye-popping $6.2 million.

The Goose carries a notable history intertwined with the defunct cryptocurrency hedge fund, Three Arrows Capital (3AC). The fund made headlines in 2021, acquiring The Goose for $5.66 million worth of ETH as part of its Starry Night Capital fund, which consists of notable NFTs from across the globe.

Following 3AC’s collapse last summer, the fund delegated Sotheby’s to curate a collection dubbed ‘Grails’ from Starry Night, including The Goose artwork. Initially predicted to fetch a sale price between $2-3 million, Cherniak’s piece exceeded expectations by far, surpassing its previous 2021 sale price.

The generous bid of $6.2 million strengthens the artwork’s reputation as incredibly sought-after, with the masked NFT art fanatic known as ‘Punk6529’ supposedly being the proud owner with the chunky crypto wallet.

The Goose’s Artistic Influence

As a generative piece, the Goose consists of an integration of algorithms during the NFT minting process, creating a captivating visual output as a result. Its combination of colors and shapes resembles a goose, as absorbed by art enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The impact of The Goose ripples throughout the generative art community, presenting how art can be born through randomly generated computer code and sold for significant amounts — signifying the fusion between art and technology in the NFT sphere.

As the NFT market continues to flourish, this jaw-dropping sale paves the way for unbounded innovation and creativity, presenting the possibilities of how blockchain and art can exist in harmony.
